How to Prioritize Prayer in Your Small Group

Sep 29, 2017

When it comes to your small group, the best way to rally your members and bring everyone together for God’s purpose is through prayer. Prioritizing prayer in your group can completely transform the dynamic and allow you to see God’s power at work.

Here are some important ways to prioritize prayer in your group:

  • Start every meeting with prayer. Kicking off your small group meeting with prayer helps each member give up what worldly things they’re dealing with and shift their focus to God. This will also help set the tone for the rest of the meeting.
  • Encourage members to keep a prayer journal. Set the precedent by explaining how you use your own prayer journal. If you don’t keep one, now is the time to start. This is a great way to talk through your prayers with God, and gives you an opportunity to look back at prayers later. Seeing how God answers your prayers is one of the most encouraging things you can experience as a Christian.
  • Ask for prayer requests from everyone. Some of your group members may be shy or think that their prayer requests are too big (or not big enough) for God. Discourage these thoughts by praying for everything — the big and the small.
  • Implement ways for group members to pray for each other. At the end of each meeting, have each member write down a prayer request (it can be anything!), and have everyone switch with someone else. Then encourage your members to pray for that prayer request all week long. This is a great way to get your small group members to start joining together in prayer for each other and will help breed trust and authenticity.
  • Don’t be the only one who prays. Explain that everyone can pray, regardless of their status or where they think they stand with God. Ask for volunteers at every meeting and even hand-pick some people to pray.
  • End every meeting with prayer. Wrapping up a great meeting with prayer is the best way to bring everything together and encourage your members to live out the topics discussed.

Prayer is important in your own walk with God and in your walk with the members of your small group. How do you make prayer a priority? We’d love to hear how it transforms your group!
