What the Bible Says About Leadership

Jul 19, 2017

Today’s culture focuses a lot on leadership. It seems that everyone has an opinion on what makes the best leader, and we have tons of leadership resources at our fingertips. However, what really matters is what the Bible says about leadership.

Here are a few things the Bible tells us about leadership:

  • Age does not matter when it comes to being a leader. 1 Timothy 4:12 says, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” Many things matter more than age when it comes to being a Godly leader.
  • Leaders are servants, too. Being a good leader does not mean being a dictator. Many of the greatest stories about leaders in the Bible depict them getting down on the level of servants and doing work alongside others. See John 13:12-15.
  • Leaders should live a respectable life. We all look up to leaders who live righteous lives, and that’s because the Bible tells us to. 1 Timothy 3:1-7 even says, “if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?”
  • Leaders should share the burden. God gives us the strength we need to carry out His works, but He also gives us people to help us carry the burdens. We see Moses doing this in Deuteronomy 1:9. By sharing the burden with others, he was able to make sure the God-given talents of others could be used, too.
  • A leader exercises transparency and integrity. A good leader has nothing to hide because of his or her integrity. When an outsider looks at a leader’s life, it should be the same inside the church as it is outside. We see the importance of this in Paul’s life (Acts 20:18).

God has called many of us to be great leaders. Sometimes, this doesn’t look like what the world says it should look like, and we should always turn to the Bible for inspiration.
